I had this problem on Ubuntu 9.10. Probably your problem is the same as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sawfish/+bug/433358

I've worked around that problem by applying a patch which fixes the
problem and rebuilding the sawfish package.

I've put some instructions at
http://call-with-hopeless-continuation.blogspot.com/2009/11/corrigindo-o-sawfish-no-ubuntu-910.html
(in portuguese, but the sequence of commands should be understandable).

The patch is from
http://sawfish.wikia.com/wiki/Fix_sawfish_server_connection

Best wishes.
