You tried both of these together -- the backtick to quote and the comma
to except pos?  How about:

(cons 'position pos)

Or does that generate the same error?

How about, from sawfish-client:

(setq pos 'south-east)

`(position . ,pos)

What's the second of those give?  Should be:

(position . south-east)
