Hi,

I installed all "*xfont*" debian packages, there were about 90
of them.

1. I'm not 100% sure if they all were installed in
"/usr/share/fonts/X11/". It is intriguing that WITHOUT them
installed (only about 10 xfonts I had installed before) I got:

   /usr/share/fonts/X11# ls -laR | wc -l
   4227

and WITH them installed (all 90 *xfont* packages) I got...

   /usr/share/fonts/X11# ls -laR | wc -l
   6882

   Only 2000 files more?

2. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the 'Section "Files"' contains ALL
the directories present in "/usr/share/fonts/X11/" (This section is
written by default by dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, and I didn't touch it):

Section "Files"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc"
        FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic"
        FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1"
        FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi"
        FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi"
        FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
        # path to defoma fonts
        FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"
EndSection

and when I start a new X session `startx -- :2` I don't notice any
speed difference or crashes. So If point (1.) is correct then we can
assume that all installed fonts were detected by xserver. I looked at
sawfish font dialog - there were a lot of fonts, but I didn't count
if it was about 500... hard to say. I did notice some interesting
fonts - eg.: the ones used by TeX were in this dialog box!

so I didn't reproduce this bug.

PS: thanks for looking at old bug reports.
