I have had similar (the same?) problems when trying to build from CVS
sources.  The autoconf file references some "rep"-specific rules which
I have been unable to track down.  I ended up falling back to the
Debian package's source tar file and patch file.  It would be really
helpful if someone could add complete build instructions to the
INSTALL or README file.
