Thanks for your reply. I did a bit more sleuthing and found that the problem seems to affect MP3 files, but not FLAC files. From the debug output, it's hard to see what the problem is (there are no obvious error messages), but I suspect it's a hangover from all the other music software I've used over the years:

I use the album sort feature, but rather than edit it using Rhythmbox, I
use an external tag editor.

I suspect that your issue is actually that Rhythmbox is failing to
update the tags in the files with the album sort field, but I don't know
where you'd look to debug that. Can you edit other fields, and are they
preserved on restart?
