The thing is that some people like to have a fine-grained progress
bar, hence long in order to handle very long tracks. There is a bug
[1] discussing that. I personnality tried implementing some non-linear
progress scale, to make it both small and precise. I have some
experimental code, I even thought at some time it was usable but
that's no longer the case: the UI turned out to be pretty awkward to
use.
