I checked the Debian changelog for libgnomevfs2 [1] and I discovered
that it isn't compiled with D-BUS and HAL support. So, I compiled it
with D-BUS and HAL support (Debian packages available at [2]).
And the result is that your test-program works greatly:
=====
luca gismo:~/src/x11/gnome/rhythmbox/arch/mattjones_audiocd/test-program$
./audio-cd-monitor
Device: /dev/hdc
CDROM
Volume is an audioCD!
luca gismo:~/src/x11/gnome/rhythmbox/arch/mattjones_audiocd/test-program$
=====
And your rhythmbox branch, too. Screenshot at [3]. Thanks Matt :-D
I don't have a lot of time to make other tests, but I'll do them ASAP.

I still think that a workaround is necessary ;-)
Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca
