Think of the following situation-- switching between no cover and a cover will make for a visual jump where the image appears and moves the sources list down. This means that users will need to memorize two positions where the Library or their defined playlists reside. (for a Gnome HIG reference, check out http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/principles-consistency.html) iTunes has it better from a UI standpoint; keeping it below the sources list will not only keep everything consistent, but limits the jarring effect.
