Yeah, the iPod is a regular firewire disk, so you can mount it, and then 
access all the files on it easily. If you want to copy a mp3 on this 
disk and be able to play it on your iPod, you have to put it in the 
appropriate place and update the iTunesDB file I talked about with info 
about the new file (artist, song name, song path, ...). So reading files 
directly from the iPod using rhythmbox is easy when you know how to get 
the song path from iTunesDB.
