Yep. There's additional code (not in C, though) in the Mandriva tool. I
was planning to mix both to get something relatively complete.

For symbolic icons, I found out today that there's a patch for the
notification area:

(and I guess the code will then be merged to gnome-shell too)
I'm mostly waiting for answers on my first comment, since that's what I
was unsure about.
For "system status / notifications separation", I think that's mostly
the work being done by this student for GSoC:

Just adding a comment since I know something here: the magnifier is
there and working. What's missing is a proper configuration tool. The
basic shell a11y is another story, though, I'd guess...
