Re: [orca-list] KDEs accessibility team revived

Hello,
Thank you for this news.
At about two months ago I had a chance to see Garuda linux with up to date KDE desktop on a friend's computer.
Krunner and the menu are very accessible and usable with orca.
I have also tried some apps and observed very interesting things.
When launching kde's default file manager dolphin, it is configured with icons view and shows my home directory arranged in three columns. Moving with left and right arrow keys orca is reporting individual files. Moving with up and down arrow keys the whole row with three file names is reported by orca. Is this a feature or a bug?
By pressing the tab key I can move to a control that changes the zoom level and pressing tab key more times seemingly does nothing as if it was stuck at the list of tabs. When inside the icons view I can press shift+tab to navigate to the list of places.
I can't figure out how to open the menu, popup menu for the selected files or change the view to a list.
I have tried using alt+enter to open a properties window for selected file. General tab has some unlabelled buttons, only the filename is readable with orca. On the permissions tab all the comboboxes are read. These comboboxes need alt+down to expand but otherwise they are working fine with orca. On the details tab there is a list of properties which is not accessible to orca. The whole properties window is not accessible to orca. The only way to explore it somewhat is by using ocr desktop.
I have tried to use flat review in the main window, it worked, I managed to switch the files view to details however only file names are reported by orca when moving up and down in the list.
Is there something I should know in order to make more of it or can you recommend other file manager I should try?

I have opened kate a KDE's text editor. While typing it reacted to the new text being inserted. I was able to use left and right arrow key to navigate by character with orca reporting the characters I was passing by. Moving by words by pressing ctrl+left and ctrl+right worked too, however orca did not reported words under the caret. When trying to navigate up and down line by line, There is no LSP server for this document repeating all over again as if focus was jumping somewhere else.
Pressing F11 for full screen seemingly fixed this and I was unable to move line by line. Text selection is reported by orca when holding down shift key and navigating with the arrow keys.
Menu bar is accessible with the alt key and is working all great.

Back to the general KDE.
Some parts of the preferences window are also useable.
However I was unable to change the keyboard language and connect to the wireless network with accessibility turned on so I was unable to experiment more with the system.

Newertheless I very much admire how KDE community is very friendly to new comers, people from all over the world. I am looking forward to any improvements we may get in the future. Despite KDE is modern it's lightweight and feels efficient.

Thanks and greetings

Peter

Howdy List,

for most time i was the lone ranger in KDEs accessibility team. But this changed now. I recognized a growing interest of KDE developers. This interest was the ability to form a brand new accessibility team.

If you are interested in helping ( documentation, development, paying bills or anything else) let me know.

There is also already a proposal to vote accessibility to one of tree KDE goals. The goals define the overall roadmap in what areas KDE concentrate development forces the next three years. See here:
https://phabricator.kde.org/T15611

KDE changed a lot over the last year. Many accessibility related issues where fixed, but still a long way to go… but we move.

Cheers chrys
