Re: [orca-list] Dell Inspiron 3501 - Sound Not Working in Linux Mint

Yeah, true enough. Checked, and works on Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop, but
not on Ubuntu MATE 20.04.

I'll just run with Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop for now, and keep my eye on
the next release of my beloved Mint, at which point I'm sure it'll
magically start working.

Thanks for the response.

Ubuntu works this time but next time it might be Mint. I really think
its that for some reason, the driver doesn't happen to be in the kernel
on the Mint installation ISO. But I've had that happen to me on Ubuntu
and Debian too. Try again in a month and maybe it will work. I'm a
Debian and Ubuntu user but if I were you, I wouldn't give up on Mint so
quickly. Try a USB headset to do the install and maybe after the
install, the sound card will be recognized.

Right now, if you install Ubuntu, you cannot use speakup. The Ubuntu
22.04 kernel doesn't include speakup modules. You'd have to recompile
the kernel to get it. So maybe you don't care about speakup but my point
is that all distros have their problems.

That sucks, I love my Linux Mint. Woner why it's not working there.
Oh well, don't have time to screw with it.

Already know probably won't get help on this one, and it's more of a
shot in the dark. Just picked up a new laptop, a Dell Inspiron 3501.
It has the following audio controllers:

     Realtek ALC3204
     Cirrus Logic CS8409 (CS42L42 + SN005825)
It's possible that the output from Orca is going to the wrong audio
controller.
If you have ssh access to the machine, you could try playing audio files
and experimenting with the audio settings. You might be better booting
from a distribution for system administration, such as Grml, rather than
from an installer. This would let you start ssh and work on the audio
configuration.
