Works fine on Ubuntu for some unknown reason, so guess I will switch to that.

That sucks, I love my Linux Mint.  Woner why it's not working there.
Oh well, don't have time to screw with it.

It's possible that the output from Orca is going to the wrong audio
controller.
If you have ssh access to the machine, you could try playing audio files
and experimenting with the audio settings. You might be better booting
from a distribution for system administration, such as Grml, rather than
from an installer. This would let you start ssh and work on the audio
configuration.
