I find that firefox runs words together -- at least when I use it on
Windows to read various pdfs.

Yes, and they're my first choice, even on a Microsoft Windows
machine. Evince also gives good results, as others have
noted. However, I expect the solutions included in Web browsers
will become (if they aren't already) the default means of reading
PDF files for most users. I don't find PDF reading to be
significantly better or worse under Linux than it is elsewhere.
