Do you mean that "orca -v reports:
42.0
this was expected. The version stays the same until a new tag appears. You
certainly won't see a commit id as upstream version.
Broken means "something doesn't work as expected". If yes, what?
Further, and unless your you are told that some fix for a bug of which you
suffer has been provided I don't see the point of building from git master.
Unless this be a hobby, of course <smile>

but now I have Orca 42.0. So that's broken in Ubuntu Mate 22.04.

So this is not a downgrade of Orca shipped in Ubuntu Mate 22.04, but an upgrade.
