I can only speculate that it has something to do with the recent move
toward the use of pipewire.
What I have noticed is two alsa packages I've not previously seen
getting fairly frequent updates recently, namely:
alsa-topology
alsa-ucm-conf
Also the alsa-card-profiles package appears to have been frequently updated in recent weeks.
I regret I don't know more. Perhaps someone else may enlighten us?

How on earth did alsa break like that. Do we know?

Take a look, if you can, at the versions you have for alsa-lib and
alsa-utils.
If version 1.2.5, you may want to try downversioning to 1.2.4.
While I didn't notice 1.2.5 breaking speech-dispatcher, it's reported to
break espeakup and I can personally confirm that.
Additionally, alsa-utils has broken at least one app, amixer. And, it's
setting volumes to 0 and the true/false flag on some devices to false.
This last will clearly keep one from hearing sound.
So, I don't know specifically about Fedora. I can personally confirm the
above with Arch as of this past weekend.
Best,

It is a bug. Use fedora mate 34. Be careful though, speech might be
permanently disabled after you restart. I haven't figured out if it is my
G14 causing the problem, or a design bug somewhere in fedora.

Hey all
So wanted to give Fedora V34 work station addition a try.
After installing it to the computer, I was unable to get orca up and running
to complete the setup process.
Is this a bug with the 34 work station version?
