Looks like my colleague Julie has a proposed fix for this issue which
also fixes the image-crasher issue. Yay!! So stay tuned, apologies for
the current problem, and thanks again for the reports!

the problem with Mate. I can confirm that Mate 1.24 is the offending
environment. Gnome 3.36 works with Chrome unstable, where Mate 1.24 does
