I have used MATE with Caja for some time without any speed issues. Is it
possible you have an older version of MATE, or more specifically Caja? I
have 1.22.3 here, but I'm fairly certain that the issues with browsing
files were fixed in 1.20, though that version may not be in some distros
yet, most notably Ubuntu LTS and possibly Debian stable.
