"make install" is only one extra step, and it goes into a place untouched by your package management. "make uninstall" brings you back to the packaged version, or if you get no speech or anything else unrecoverable happens, you canĀ  just run
/usr/bin/orca --replace
from your run window. If there is a better way to do it, someone definitely chime in here. As of now, I didn't find anything better, unless it can run from the source tree without being installed.
