I can't confirm your observations, probably because I have a fast 
machine (quad-core Intel Xeon CPU, 32GB RAM, Intel P51 laptop, running 
Linux directly on the hardware).

Note, however, that the GNOME foundation has a plan to optimize the 
communication protocol used by the accessibility infrastructure over 
DBus. This may improve performance in general, provided of course that 
their development funding continues and they actually implement it.
