I'm at a conference this week, so I may not commit a fix until next week. Your solution makes sense if Gedit is the only app that's going to go this route. If there are -- or will be -- other apps, then parsing the name as a fallback might be the way to go instead.

In the meantime, you could apply your solution downstream.
