https://zorinos/ has another one aimed at all those people with
under-resourced windows 7 machines that won't be able to run windows 10.
It though is based lots more on ubuntu.

Ah maybe that was part of my problem. Although I seem to recall getting the

infamous blue screen instead of an error related to sound drivers when I
tried
to run NVDA. Still, that could explain why I didn't even hear the startup
chime
chord, although I didn't recall it even getting that far.
