Thanks. On Fedora, brlapi is indeed a separate package. I installed it, 
uncommented the api-options option to use the brl group in 
/etc/brltty.conf, added myself to that group, then logged out and back 
in. brltty is restarted. Is there anything else I need to run to make 
brlapi work? I still see "screen not in text" on my display.
