Re: [orca-list] Updating Orca

Hi Chris and all,
First I want to say that I really appreciate these audio and text tutorials, as well as Joanie actively 
monitoring this list.  I am also coming from another OS, first Windows and then later I migrated to MacOS.  I 
do have a few questions regarding the installation of new Orca versions in general, and about the tutorial.
1.  I noticed when you were building the dependencies for Orca you used apt-get build-dep orca.  I’ve also 
seen the command apt-get build-dep gnome-orca.  Why is there a difference?  Does it matter which command you 
use?
2. According to the readme for orca it seems that the latest version of Gnome is always required .  So I just 
want to verify that this is the case.  If so, the update and upgrade commands should take care of that, 
correct?
3. What is the python command you are using doing.  Is that so that it replaces the version of Orca that is 
already there, so it gets installed in usr/bin?  I’ve seen the configure script that comes with the Orca 
source run which seems to install a separate copy into usr/local instead.  That seems to be a safe rout in 
case something goes wrong with the new installation.

Just want to make sure I’m understanding all of this correctly, as you went into the mechanics of upgrading, 
but not as much of the theory behind it.  I know that was intentional, but some curious minds are inquiring, 
including mine. :) Thanks again for the guides.

Anyway, I appreciate all you developers are doing to make things in Linux so accessible! I still have 
probably more to learn than the average Linux user would. Coming from Windows, it's been, even despite my 
very good technical knowledge, a bit of a learning curvge, especially the CLI side of things, but hey! I'm 
getting there slowly but surely. I always say, I'm so proud of myself for how much I've already learned and 
accomplished. And unlike before when I'd install, then give up on it a few weeks later, now, I'm not giving 
up. I'm stubbornly progressing my way through learning things.

I hope the guides up there help. Some of them are ever ever so slightly
outdated, but not by much. Definitely not enough to make anything go
boom. That's for sure.


In fact, you wanna know something funny? Every time I go to update Orca
on any newly installed system, I have to consult my own website there,
as I don't remember the git clone URL off hand to do so.


Plus, from what I'm told, I'm not using the correct git repository. One
person tells me I am, but, I am told by more I'm not. So, if someone can
get! me the correct URL to git clone, I'll edit that post with the
correct information.


That site isn't going anywhere, and I update it with new tips and tricks
quite regularly, so, check back often.

    My computer will go into text mode, unless I select a prior

    the kernel or trying to update to a new version. If you do, it
    is best to probably just do a reinstall.
