Re: [orca-list] Updating Orca

OK, I have a very good  guide with both text, and an audio walkthrough on updating Orca. You'll find it in the blog area of:

http://www.christophergilland.com/linux

I hope the guides up there help. Some of them are ever ever so slightly outdated, but not by much. Definitely not enough to make anything go boom. That's for sure.

In fact, you wanna know something funny? Every time I go to update Orca on any newly installed system, I have to consult my own website there, as I don't remember the git clone URL off hand to do so.

Plus, from what I'm told, I'm not using the correct git repository. One person tells me I am, but, I am told by more I'm not. So, if someone can get! me the correct URL to git clone, I'll edit that post with the correct information.

That site isn't going anywhere, and I update it with new tips and tricks quite regularly, so, check back often.

Chris.

Well I just ran into a repo could not be verified error on a fresh system.....so that could be one thing, it threw out an error that it couldn't verify the authenticity even though I had the correct link.

I don't understand what the difficulty with installing Orca is, but you can always wait until the latest version hits your distro.

Thanks.

Hi,
is there an easy way to get a binary for latest orca instead of installing orca in this violent way?

Hello,

yes, you can clone the git repo and run the autogen, make, make install.

As for updating Mate, I don't recommend it. it seems like every time I have updated, after reboot I get a non-speaking computer. My computer will go into text mode, unless I select a prior version of the kernel. Terrible, annoying, but that is my experience. So you can update, so long as you aren't updating the kernel or trying to update to a new version. If you do, it is best to probably just do a reinstall.

thanks.

Hi folks

I would like to update Orca, or at least learn *how* to do it. Am i
correct in thinking that I need to clone the Git repo for Orca and follw
any instructions that might be found in the README file?

Also, I am running Ubuntu Mate which is I think built on top an earlier
version of GNOME. Is there a way of updating Mate or is it not
recommended to update Orca to anything other  than the shipped version
for a relative novice?

Thanks

Best wishes

James
