Hello,
After Luke was forced to quit his job at Canonical, no one has been hired to continue his work.
Perhaps there are some community members contributing to the accessibility of ubuntu but the move has been understood and canonical no longer cares about accessibility that much as they used to for example 10 years ago.
Greetings
Peter

fare play,
then I can assume it's a speech-dispatcher issue?
who deels with accessibility on the ubuntu* side now that luke does not?

Well, I had to back out this change. When I added the parameter
"tsched=0" then Orca would only echo pairs of characters as I arrowed
through them. So for example, as I right arrowed over the word "pulse",
I'd hear "pu ls e" instead of "p u l s e".

hi all,
here is a post I made to the orca list regarding pulseaudio, I hope it
still applies now, you aught to give it a try.
if it does not help, remove the changes made.
here goes,
hi guise,
here is a work around for pulse audio to get it working for now.
go to terminal
then launch gedit using sudo
sudo gedit
when gedit is open, you need to browse to /etc/pulse/default.pa
using the open file dyalog box
in gedit
when you have default.pa open in gedit locate the folowing line
load-module module-udev-detect
and you add the folowing
you put a space after udev-dectet
tsched=0
in the end it will look like this
load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
save the file and reboot then pulse audio should work
I hope you understood what I was trying to say smile
to revert these actions, remove tsched=0 from the end of the line!

Using Ubuntu, it is fuzzy for a split second at first boot, then after

completely stops with a clean sounding voice.

Hi Dave,
I've reported this before to Luke, back when he was one of the lead
developers on the Speech Dispatcher project, and I recall he said it
was related to the way in which Speech Dispatcher and Pulse
communicated with each other - and I assume quite a bit of work to
fix.
Usually on my setup it starts off a bit crackly but settles down
after
a minute or so.
Does yours improve after a while or is it a constant issue no matter
how long you leave Orca running?
Regards,
Nick

Any ideas what I can try adjusting in speech dispatcher's or
pulseaudio's configurations that might smoothe the speech? Other
audio, including from espeak, not involving speech dispatcher, is
fine.
Thanks,
