If it's running GNOME, try Alt-F2, type "orca" (without the quotation 
marks), followed by enter.


Also, are you sure Orca isn't working on the live image? It could be the 
volume setting on your sound card, for example. If you have a braille 
display, it would be interesting to know whehter BRLTTY is running at 
all - even if it says "screen not in text mode".
