Re: [orca-list] Chromium will be accessible with Orca

Right now, the way we're doing things is I'm finding the most
significant problems blocking Orca support and filing individual bugs.
My colleague and I are then fixing those bugs in collaboration with
Google. As those bugs get fixed, I find more blockers and file those.
Rinse and repeat. It's hard, this early on, to identify and file
everything that's broken/missing because it's something I discover as I
try to add support in Orca.

The "roadmap" is largely in my head at this time. That said:
1. Get widgets working. That will be a great milestone, but if you
cannot read any other content, web pages still won't be accessible.
2. Get structural navigation commands and page summary working. That
still won't make web pages accessible.
3. Get say all working.
4. Get caret navigation working with basic content.
5. Get caret navigation working with more complicated content.
6. Ensure browse mode and focus mode switching work as expected.

All of the above require a non-trivial amount of work. I think user
testing will be appropriate after step 4 is complete. Before that time,
you will report, "it doesn't work!" And I will respond, "I know...."

Thanks in advance for your interest, and your patience. When we're
further along in both Chromium and Orca I will definitely let y'all know.

Hello Pavel,

As I've said here I'll be happy to help on testing, especially with both
screen magnifier and screen reader.

Do you know if there are a mailing list or a bug tracker to follow
progresses?

Best regards,
Alex.

Hi,
I get this message from one of Chromium developers
(dmazzoni chromium org)

Hi - we're actively doing some work on Linux accessibility, there
have been a lot of patches recently.
The big blocker right now is that the AtkWindow interface isn't
implemented. Without that, Orca is totally silent - but if you open
Accerciser, you'll see that a good portion of the ATK interface is
already fully implemented.
In another month or two we should have AtkWindow implemented and a
lot of stuff should start working.
Are you interested in contributing or even just testing? Are you able
to check out tip-of-tree Chromium from source?
