Hello Joanie and Andy,

I confirm the issue here on Debian Stretch with Mate 1.16. It was also 
present in version 1.8 with GTK2.

Indeed the issue should be fixed on Mate side. I don't have the time 
right now to report it and analyze it but I keep it in my mailbox.
