II'm not the OP but I use debian stretch and this problem comes up if 
you just use the standard gnome-orca and thunderbird packages. However, 
I also think that if you install gnome-orca from the stretch-backports 
repository, the problem goes away.

In other words, if you are a debian stretch user, I think you can fix 
the problem by doing this:

1. Configure stretch-backports in your sources.list. Edit the file, 
/etc/apt/sources.list and add the line:

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian stretch-backports main

2. Update the dpkg cache and install gnome-orca from strectch-backports:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -t stretch-backports install gnome-orca

3. Restart orca, press Alt+F2 and type "orca --replace".
