I am not an Ubuntu user, but why not use the apt command, fully accessible in mate-terminal?
For instance to search for packages I think that you can just type in mate-terminal:
apt search ...
To actually do administrative tasks like installing pacakages, you probably will need to type sudo first.
To know more, just type:
man apt

How do I get the different app centre or software for Ubuntu Mate 18.4?
The Software Bootique which comes with Ubuntu Mate is currently unusable with Orca because all you get when
you tab through the controls is button as they are all unlabelled.
I tried sudo apt install software-centre and even tried spelling the word centre the Anlmerican way butbest
I got was an error message about not being able to find a package or it mentioned an old package or
something and nothing installed.
