I use speakup to install debian all the time.  I'm not using any virtual 
system here but real hardware.  I give it about 30 seconds when the dvd 
starts spinning and hit s then hit enter and expect speakup to start 
talking on my speaker system.  It takes a few seconds but the first 
question you get is to choose your language and if you use english hit 
enter for the default.  Default for country is united states and default 
time zone is eastern when you get to it.
