Is this correct that you have more than one audio alsa output devices 
and tried to use second one?
I don't use alsa output due to some stability issues in the past.

My setup in your use  case would be:
audiooutputmethod "libao"

cat /etc/libao.conf
default_driver=alsa
quiet

cat /etc/asound.conf
defaults.pcm.card 1
