Combo boxes were never meant to have that many objects in them. If there
is API in speech-dispatcher to get the variants associated with a given
voice, then Orca's preferences should be modified to use it. If there's
not, such API should be added to speech-dispatcher (and then Orca's
preferences should be modified to use it).

Actually there is, but it is currently used by the espeak* modules to
put the country, and the variant only shows up in the name with a +.

I'd say we should introduce a country field, so that espeak* modules can
really put the variant name into the variant field.

You mean in the Orca settings GUI, right?

I mean in the speech-dispatcher interface, that Orca will be able to
expose as it wishes in its GUI.

I agree. Then this field would include all that's before the +,

No, we want to get rid of that + thing which is not documented, not
standard (only the espeak and espeak-ng modules expose it), and
confusing. Some modules put the country in the variant field, others put
it in the language field and put the variant name in the variant field,
etc. All of this just comes from the missing country field in the speech
dispatcher interface, so that's what we have to fix.

PS To be picky "locale" would be more accurate than "country" for the
first field, although maybe not well understood by some users.

Concerning speech-dispatcher itself we can't really modify the
interface. And there is no point in stuffing language_country in a
"locale" field only for the application to split it again :)

The naming is up to Joanie, anyway ;)

Well, I believe it should really be called "language": here we are
really only talking about the language part of the locale. Technically
the choice maps to a locale (though not exactly since for instance there
is West Armenia vs East Armenia variants for Armenian while there is no
such dinstinction for the locale), but there is no need to introduce the
"locale" term which non-technical people do not know.
