Re: [orca-list] Screen Reader Preferences GUI very slow if EspeakListVoiceVariant is set to 1 (was:Re: other tts with orca)

Hello,

I agree with this suggestion.

Maybe 2 drop-downs would be enough, the fist being conceptually similar
to a locale, i.e. mainly language+territory as specified in POSIX or
implemented in gettext, the second being the voice with variants.
Just my 2 cents and of course I don't know how much work would be needed
to implement something like that.

@bittukumar: don't worry about you English or spelling, mine at least is
not better and what you write is perfectly understandable. Furthermore
I guess that few people reading this list would be able to write
anything in your native language ;)

@All: Remember to include the list as recipient or in copy so everybody
can participate to the conversation.

Best regards,

Didier

Hello, Joani and all the experts!
It is possible to add a feature, where in Orca's voice tab there will
be 3 different drop-downs.
Like:
1. language:
2. Voice types: Default, e Male, Female, Other.
3. Voice variants: Male-1, Female-1 Crock-1, clat-1.

Or only 2 drop-downs Like IN NVDA menu:
1. Language: English-GBR, English-USA, Hindi.
2. Voice variants: Male-1,2,34,5 Female-1,2,3,4,5, Crock-1,2.3.
clat-1,2,3, Max, Mario, Stef,1,2,3.

I think this will not put more lode on Orca GUI menu and it will be
easy to select the voice and there variants. it will be good thing for
new comers like me who was using NVDA or Jaws on windows Machine. If
possible then please addt that feature in Orca's next update.

Please try to understand me, my English or way of righting mayor not be proper.

after <Orca>+<Space>, the GUI appears after around 15 seconds then
seems stuck for about 15 more seconds, as well as any action on it,
if I set EspeakListVoiceVariant to 1 in one of the config files.

However the variants do appear in the Person drop down-list and
I can choose one and that works, being very patient.

Maybe this is related to the list of languages + variants being then
very long?

Best regards,

Yeah, unfortunately that's true.

That's right, thanks for the heads-up.

However the system becomes very unresponsive when opening the Orca
Screen Reader Preferences GUI to choose one of the variants in the
Person drop down list.

Am I the only one observing this behavior?

YOu can use more than 1 voice variant. You must edit
/etc/speech-dispatcher/modules/espeak-ng.conf or espeak.conf and turn on
voice variants.

Hello,

espeak-ng provides only one voice by language (and in some cases
a distinct one per geographic area). The are all listed here:
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/blob/master/docs/languages.md

Legacy espeak provides less voices.

At least there is a Czech voice, listed as cs, family West Slavic) ;)

Also, mbrola provides two Czech voices.

Didier

Hey all, I have 2 questions.
First: How to use other voice variant of Espeak TTS with Orca?
In NVDA there is a option to change the language and it's voice
variant.
so how to do same in orca?
Raise the Orca Screen Reader Preferences GUI pressing  <Orca> +
<space>
then in the Voices tab select the  Speech synthesizer.

Assuming it is espeak-ng, you can choice among available languages in
the
Person drop-down list.

The same apply for other speech synthesizers, I assume.

Didier

second: is it possible to use Google TTS with Orca? If yes, then
how?
please gide me.
I don't know.
