Re: [orca-list] Odd question - installed gnome into ubuntu, and, it won't accept my login password

Oh, shoot, I just realized many of the users I support had these exact symptoms after I upgraded their machines from ubuntu vivid to xenial. What was happening was that they were authenticating correctly but lightdm was failing to start the X11 session for them. So they were getting thrown back to the login screen and it looked like their password was not being accepted. A good way to diagnose this is to go to a character console and try logging in. That might be difficult in these days when orca and speakup don't play well together because of pulse. But you might try connecting via ssh if that is enabled. Or you can go to a character console and use some app on your phone as your screen reader.

Also, my end-users routinely report this same behaviour when they have run out of disk space. That almost never happens any more which is why I forgot about it. But it looks like it's not taking your password when what is really happening is that your X11 session is failing to start because it can't create files in your home directory for the session.

To fix the problem caused by the upgrade, what I had to do was to delete some X11 session and/or cache files from the user's home directory. Unfortunately, I can't recall the names of the files I had to delete. It was something like .Xsession-cache. I poked around in the home directories hoping to trigger my memory but I don't see them. We're now running zesty and I think the problematic files were deleted by the op sys.

I originally figured out which files to delete by checkying the logs. Even if you're running out of disk space, the reason why lightdm can't start your X session should be in the lightdm logs.

Running out of disk space is definitely one thing that causes this symptom.

Hi,

I believe that if you create a new user it will log in, there is
probably something preventing you logging in.

Also, if you have run out of disk space this can cause problems logging in.

on the machine:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop

While it did ask me for the password for my account, and then
continued with installation process, prompting me to select display
manager at the end, etc., if I now power up the machine again, then if
I select ubuntu as the session option, it will accept the same
password, but, if I select either gnome default, or gnome classic as
the session option, it will then not accept the same password, for the
same account?

As in, while the same process worked fine under the virtual instance,
running inside VMWare on my windows laptop, it's a bit strange that
it's behaving so differently on the desktop PC?

Any thoughts on interim workarounds, or even just reasons why this
could occur?
