Re: [orca-list] Unable to login to a gnome session with gdm.

Hello,

Okay so if it is user specific, there are a few things you can try:

* Make sure file permissions and ownership on your home directory and all its subfolders is correct. John has already suggested this and it's very likelly to happen if you have reinstalled your system and restored your home directory from a backup or if you are using dedicated home partition accross installs.

* Make sure you can play sound when logging in as the user in question.

I am using commands like

speaker-test

pacmd list-sinks

espeak hello

spd-say hello

to see if my sound setup is all okay.

* If you have no feetback after trying to login via GDM or you are placed back to the login screen window checking Xorg or GDM logs would still be usefull.

I would suggest taking look at:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log for the GDM X session
~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log for the user X session

* If nothing of these brings any clues as to what might be going wrong I suggest reading systemd journal.

Read the log since last boot from newest to oldest

sudo journalctl -b -r | more

Read last three minutes of logs from newest to oldest

sudo journalctl -b -r --since "3 minutes ago" | more

I know this is perhaps a bit complicated but newertheless is good to know. Of course you can read journalctl --help or look to the Arch wiki if you need more hints on how to read systemd journal.

If you can find out more regarding your logging in issue and you still need some help with other things to try, please continue the discussion.

Greetings

Peter

This is a fresh install of gnome.  Intrestingly enough if I create a second account all works as it should.  I am not able to login to the original account I created I am still testing some things, but it is very strange.  I will report if I find any problems.

Hello,

If you are observing this with multiple distros, I guess this might be specific to your hardware configuration.
Have you looked into the file
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
If there are some errors or hints you might use while investigating the issue further?
Has this started happening latelly or are you seeing it ever since youVe installed gnome?

Hi all,

Using arch linux with all updated solsoftwa, I am unable to login to a gnme session with gdm.  I first have to enter my user name and then my password but this does not seem to be working.  Loging into a text concal works fine but not a gdm gnome session.  Any one else have this problem.  I also had this problem with paldo as well.  If anyone else has this problem  would you please pass on a way to fix this.  I may be able too setup auto login but would prefer not have to do that if possib.lle

Thanks.

Matthew
