Re: [orca-list] Fwd: [uruk] uruk gnu/linux-2.0- beta-2

First test I do once iso is on dvd is see if iso boots and I may or may not have to do something to bring the screen-reader up. Uruk passed the first test and I needed only wait and the screen-reader came up talking. Next I check out the pre-install real estate to get the lay of the land. Uruk passed this test real well once I opened the desktop. I found lots of controls easily accessible in this iso I hadn't encountered in mate before. Next I'll install this on an amd K8 Athelon machine on a real hard drive, got no virtual drives or resources and wouldn't know how to use those yet if I stumbled over them anyway. This will take a little longer but from initial successes ought to prove promising.

The reason for the first test is sourceforge.net itself and many isos on sourceforge.net are not in torrents.

I used my sf.sh script to get this iso and it cannot verify the iso unfortunately but I got lucky this time.
For the script, cut here.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
# file: sf.sh - sourceforge.net download script
wget -bc --max-redirect=10000 --trust-server-names $1

Orca users, meet Uruk 2.0 Beta 2.

This is a fully-lebre, GNU Linux distro, using Mate desktop and packages from Trisquel 8.0, Linux-libre LTS Kernel, the gcc ppa, and its own repository. I've been running it on my little netbook for about a week. The orca speech integration is what one would expect from Mate 1.12 and Orca 3.18-- good enough for my needs on this machine.

The desktop has one panel, reachable with a press of 'ctrl-alt-escape'. On this top panel, you will find the notification area, battery level indicator, and a widget orca calls "indicator applet complete"; this used for adjusting volume and working with bluetooth and network connections. Once focused, it can be tough to get orca out of this applet. I have to mess with context menus a bit. I've written to the project's mailing list, asking why they didn't just use the standard nm applet.

The items on the standard top menus are combined onto one pull-down, accessed with a press of "alt+f1".

The desktop has the "usual suspects", plus a script with which to instll the GNU Guix package manager on top of the apt. I haven't done anything with this yet, but it looks like it will allow easy updating to later packages and roll-back, if things end up broken.

That's my brief story on this, now, see below, for a bit from the original release announcement.

I'd like others to try this and communicate with the project leads, one of whom is blind, I think, on your experience. I like it, so far, and think it's almost ready. My concern is that its sources come, mainly, from Trisquel 8.0, which is not yet out, and appears to have stagnated. I know they aim for a stable release, but maybe should use Debian stable as the base? Maybe integrating this Guix can help, here? The Linux-Libre kernel is maintained (lts and rolling).

Cheers,

Dave  Hunt
