Nick:
You need to say a bit more about what you're looking for. For instance,
you can spend anywhere from around $20 to over $2,000 for a Linux
compatible sound card.
I would suggest the RME cards that are preferred by people working
professionally in audio are overkill for Orca.
On the other hand, so is a PCIe bus. That's a lot of bus for a little
bang. Seriously, I would simply use something USB at the lower price
end.
But, let me also ask you about the problem you're trying to solve. What
do you mean the onboard sound isn't great? Orca isn't going to make use
of a card supporting 192Khz sampling at 32-bits.
So, are you simply looking for better audio quality out of your TTS? Or
is your onboard device failing on some boots?
I ask the last because I'm closing in on a bug where my default, onboard
snd_hda_intel device is failing to find a slot on some boots, and
working perfectly well on a reboot.
I'm finding the following error when the card fails to load:
kernel: snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: cannot find the slot for index 0 (range 0-4), error: -16
kernel: snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: Error creating card!
kernel: snd_hda_intel: probe of 0000:00:1b.0 failed with error -16
I just ran into the above this morning rebooting because of an kernel
upgrade. I booted three times with the above error, before my fourth
reboot brought up this Realtek device correctly.
Best,
Janina

Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a good PCI Express sound card that they know works well
under Linux with Orca?
The onboard sound on my system is not great so I'd like to upgrade to
something better, but I'm a bit out of touch when it comes to knowing what
sound card brands have good Linux driver support.
Happy to look at USB sound adapters, but would prefer something internal if
possible.
Thanks for any advice.
Regards,
Nick
