Well, so far the debate's not huge, and discussions of this stuff can
help us see others' viewpoints.

Wow, I didn't know this was going to start a huge debate. I was just
throwing the idea out there, since nvda does this, and no, we are not
trying to mimick nvda at all, nor should we, but it would help those
coming over from nvda feel a little more familiar, although if this ever
does get implemented it should of course be configurable.
Thanks

Well, sounds are words, to, and in this case pretty short ones whose
meanings are known at least to the folks who know the language they're
in. Mind, I wouldn't object to their being available as an option,
but the benefit seems small. (And as one of those dudes with some
hearing loss, I need some better speech, anyway.)
Best!

We are talking about a sound, not words.
Sounds can play in as little as a tenth of a second and be understood
by many, certainly a half second sound can be distinguished by just
about everyone
with fair or better hearing. Speech takes longer, e.g. even at very
fast word per minute counts it takes longer to hear two words than to
hear a sound
icon. For those who listen to their screenreaders at more typical
rates the difference is greater, and for some words are more
distracting than a
non-verbal sound for communicating relatively sinmple information.
