Just a little update, links are working correctly for me using enter now.
This is a great app with orca, i.e. it lets me rewind with up arrow if I miss something and then continues to
read the page. I've st voice rate somewhat
slower in app specific settings since I use a very fast setting as default, and it gives me a very good
reading experience.
I need to investigate a bit as to what can be configured, i.e. I don't see a prefferences item in the main
menu, but there is a .ppub.conf file in my home
dir where one can set catet to true. It's False by default.
Usercss is an option, so I am supposing one can configure font size, colors and such using a css file of some
sort, but I've not looked at any docs yet.
Ppub is a python2 based program, and nice and light as it should be.
Unless something turns up that I'm not expecting I'm going to include ppub in my must have apps list, and
with this around I'll start choosing epub as my
default ebook format.
This is a pleasant surprise/very glad the original question got me to take a quick look about.
Regards,

I do not know if you can find ppub for Debian, but it uses gtk3 and webkit according to the discription in
the Arch AUR.
I just installed it, and once the karat is turned on in the view menu it seems very usable. I'm not sure
about some details, i.e. I did not go where I
thought I woulod when I pressed enter on a link, but I'm guessing a simulated mouse click will do the
trick.
Right arrow takes one to the next page.
If you can't find it in Debian repos I think it's likely to build easily enough on most systems.
This url might help.

If you have trouble, let me know and I will look in to it a bit more.

Hello,
Cainteoir GTK definatelly appears accessible.
It feells similar to using some mobile apps on an android phone. You can
browse table of contents where available and play, pause, stop, revind /
fast forward like on an old casette player.
Greetings
Peter

Calibre can convert to plain text docx and many others.
I do not know about accessibility, but cainteoir will read epub too.

If I remember correctly, Calibre can convert it to HTML. If that doesn't work,
you can always unzip it (it's a standard zip archive), then read the HTML
files directly in your preferred browser.
