Orca stays silent only if there are no selectable items. I use Orca 3.20.2.

I don't know about that.

The solution to change the color is :
0) Place your cursor on the column you want to select
1) Select the table column with the table menu and select submenu
2) On the table menu, go to the property item
3) Go to the background tab
4) Use tab until to hear the "color background" label and move with 
up/down and right/left arrows.
