Re: [orca-list] Use Linux as a daily driver

Howdy,

in case of OCR, i did a lot with tesseract-ocr. its a realy powerfull solution and i mostly had realy good results. of course this depends on how good is your scanned document, noise and the contrast.
ABBY is also available on linux. but i didnt tryed this
http://www.ocr4linux.com/de:start
cuneform should also have some good results but i also never used this.
Lios is basically a graphical frontend for tesseract and cuneform.
you may also like to use my more simple ocrpdf it just OCR everything in a PDF and present it to you.
https://github.com/chrys87/ocrpdf
but its just made for a fast access of an not OCRed file, it hasnt many options.

a little different solution to your screenreader is ocrdesktop. it could help in more less or not accessible windows or dialogs by just take a screenshot of the current window and OCR its content. cou can also interact with the "ocred widgets" like perform clicks and those stuff.
https://github.com/chrys87/ocrdesktop

As distro i could Arch, talkingarch or Sonar (designed for visual impaird ). Arch based distros are realy near on the upstream und has the most current software ( this matters because in the a11y stack, things got improved realy fast). The AUR is also a very powerfull concept.

cheers chrys

Betreff: [orca-list] Use Linux as a daily driver
Hi all:

I want to give Linux a chance as a daily driver.
I have a workstation that I can use for testing out different Linux distros.
If all goes well I'd love to switch to Linux as my main OS on my laptop as well.

My requirements:

* Using the web is important.
I particularly need to use banking and the gmail interface.

* Email - see above.
I use the Gmail standard view to manage my email and it works great on
Windows with Firefox and NVDA.
Of course I can go back to use a email client like Thunderbird if Orca
does not handle the gmail interface to my satisfaction.
However, I really prefer the webmail approach.

* Use the terminal effectively; especially remote admin work via ssh.

* OCR
I currently use ABBYY FineReader on Windows and it's a great solution.

How well does Linux/Orca perform with the above requirements?

Thanks,

-Øyvind
