Thank you, Kyle and Krishnakant! I'll try Mate.
Do you know if it's possible to copy&paste with BRLTTY from a text
console to the GUI, e.g. to Firefox? That would be convenient, since I
most of the time, use programs in a screen session on a ssh server. And
so it would be easy to find information in an email an paste it in a
web form within Firefox.
I think I'd like to use startx to start the desktop. Is it
possible to shut it down with a key combination?
Thanks and regards,
Lars

I have gotten MATE working without much trouble on the Raspberry Pi 2. It
works well with speech-dispatcher even without Pulseaudio installed, and it
appears to mix sound well, if you need speech on the desktop at all. In
other words, even if you turn on Orca's speech, you shouldn't have a problem
using Speakup, as audio mixing appeared to be done in hardware, so you
shouldn't need to worry about any conflict taking place between sounds. This
is of course my experience, and although it seemed fairly conclusive, your
mileage still may vary. In any case, you shouldn't have a problem if you
intend to use only braille on the desktop.
Sent from my piggy bank. Two cents was all I could get out.
