In contrast, if I open a Caja window and perform similar steps in the
icon view, the typeahead search entry is visible. So I can see when I
mistakenly type a "k" before a "t". It's obvious that I can fix such a
mistake by pressing left arrow and then backspace. It's equally obvious
that pressing left arrow will not change selection in the icon view
because I am obviously not in the icon view; I'm in the entry. So when
the entry is visible, I think it would be bad if the Caja developers
lied to Orca in this case because doing so would mean users who are
blind are being denied information that sighted users have immediate
access to.
Actually as it is currently, when you get Orca to speak to you when
using the typeahead search (given you've got directories "me", "meld",
"mesa-12.0.4-2" and "Modèles" in the current directory of course),
you'll get:
PRESS: m
Speaking 'm '
Speaking 'text.'
Speaking 'm'
Speaking '<directory you're in> frame'
Speaking 'Icon View layered pane 0 items'
Speaking 'me folder icon.'
Speaking 'text.'
Speaking 'm'
PRESS: e
Speaking 'e '
Speaking '<directory you're in> frame'
Speaking 'Icon View layered pane 0 items'
Speaking 'me folder icon.'
PRESS: l
Speaking 'l '
Speaking 'meld folder icon.'
PRESS: BackSpace
Speaking 'backspace '
Speaking 'me folder icon.'
PRESS: s
Speaking 's '
Speaking 'mesa-12.0.4-2 folder icon.'
PRESS: BackSpace
Speaking 'backspace '
Speaking 'me folder icon.'
PRESS: BackSpace
Speaking 'backspace '
PRESS: o
Speaking 'o '
Speaking 'Modèles folder icon.'
PRESS: BackSpace
Speaking 'backspace '
Speaking 'me folder icon.'
And when the entry disappears, nothing is said (which is expected from
this log, as Orca says we're in the icon view).
The annoying part is going back and forth between the text entry (text)
and the icon view (frame). And you see that after the second key press
('e' here) Orca says we're back in the icon view, not the text entry, so
it's already screwed up from your "not lying" POV, so *something* should
be fixed (possibly in Caja's side) in any case.
Regards,
Colomban
PS: I'll leave the debate of what should actually happen in the best
situaion to blind users because I can not fairly put myself in their
shoes, both because I'm a developer and I'm familiar with what actually
happens, whether I see the feedback or not (on the Desktop), and because
I'm sighted so in other cases I see the entry anyway.
