Having had interest in trying to get YASR up and going on a virtual
image of free BSD, it was mainly that either YASR seriously needs
updating both in its documentation in how to do an install and also,
work maybe in getting it to work better along side one of the speech
servers. The rout a friend and I had taken was to attempt to get it
working with the emacs speech server so it could talk to espeak, but
even though it actually had working speech and the beginnings of an
ability to read stuff on the screen, we were never able to get any of
the YASR navigation commands to work. One larger problem was that after
using it for a few minutes, you'd sometimes lose the ability to stop the
speech once it had started which would end up leading to you having to
exit out of YASR. This exiting would often times cause the vm to majorly
freeze.
Not one for going and tinkering around with makefiles and such, I can't
recall all the steps he used to properly configure the emacspeak or
whatever to get it talking with YASR, but once we started having issues
with the machine freezing, it became sorta frustrating, not being able
to really find any updated documentation on how to properly set things up.
I to would love an accessible screenreader for the console, even if it
were only good enough to read output for just a command or two, so I'd
think some sort of work on YASR would be the best thing to start looking
at for Pfsense.
That would be amazingly awesome, for sure.
Pretty cool stuff. :)
Take care.

Nice! so heres the response I received. I'll add in Anyone having more
experience with freebsd than me chime in I never used it I don't believe.
Hi Tim,
So the installation part is definitely the issue here? I got the owner
of company behind pfSense interested in addressing this topic. Can you
share specifics what the main issue is?
Thanks!

Hi.
You cannot use Orca on the pfSense live image.
pfSense is console mode only - no desktop and thus not possible to
run orca.
I would love to be able to install pfsense (I've used it before but
needed sighted help to install) - post installation config and
management of the firewall is done via the pfSense web gui.
If there is a console screen reader that will run under fbsd it might
be possible to implement accessibility into the pfsense live image.
Speakup is a console screen reader but Linux only since it's running
in kernel space.
For this reason I dropped pfsense and configured my own firewall from
scratch using Debian as my base.
My debian based firewall/router is running text mode only and I use
speakup on the console.
However, I usually manage it via ssh though but it's nice to have the
opportunity to use the console if required for troubleshooting etc.

Hello, so from my understanding, Pfsense is bassed on freeBSD,
and there
is a port of orca available for it. I've downloaded the latest
version,
pfSense-CE-2.3-RELEASE-i386.iso, and am in contact with there
support to see
if I can install pfsense on this box if i choose and then install orca,
anyone had luck with this so far? Here is one response I received
from them
about this issue.
Hi Tim,
Just to point out, pfSense is actually based on FreeBSD, not Linux.
I do see
there's a orca port for FreeBSD however I have not tried it.
However, you
don't want to do anything via the console interface since it's
without any
kind of GUI in KDE / gnome sense, instead it's managed remotely via
web GUI.
So assuming you have orca on your operating system or any kind of
accessibility ready, all you need to do is open pfSense management
IP in
your local browser. Then all management is being done via Web GUI.
Can orca
or any accessibility reader help there?
The only issue I see here the installation process. However, if you
lets say
purchase preinstalled appliance, you will have pfSense already
preinstalled.
Other option is to download our preinstalled virtual machine for
VMware if
you have Gold Subscription. Third option is perhaps to have a friend
install
pfSense for you. I'm still trying to understand what exactly is
causing the
main issue here, so let me know if I'm on the right track!
Please feel free ask more questions.
Thanks!
Ivor
My main issue is, if I boot that iso from a cd/usb drive, I'm
assuming I'd
have to attempt and somehow install orca then go from there? Thanks
all!
