Re: [orca-list] should orca announce aria landmarks by default?

I'm OK with this. Right now, I'm in the habit of using the h key as soon as a web page loaded to see if I'm going to be able to navigate by headings or not. I haven't gotten into the habit of checking for landmarks yet. I think a brief message announcing that there are landmarks, headings and maybe even tables on the page would be OK.

I'm inclined that simply announcing landmarks, especially as a default

Note that landmarks are a pre-defined set of roles judged to be common
on pages. Here's a good page explaining ARIA landmarks:
http://www.paciellogroup.com/blog/2013/02/using-wai-aria-landmarks-2013/

The point that landmarks indicate pre-defined regions of a page is, imo,
a clue to the real power of landmarks. Because of that, I think the most
important thing we Orca users might want to know is whether, or not
there are ARIA landmarks in a page when we first load the page. I would
think this could even be effective as a sound notification. Because,
when you know there are ARIA landmarks, you know you can far more
quickly get an overview of what the page offers. And, you can reliably
get past structures you might often prefer to skip--like the nav links.

Another way to put my argument is that having the landmarks read amidst
all other verbose read outs is a waste, because we know in advance what
the landmarks are when they're present. The point of landmarks is to be
able to quickly get to those common structures. Were they already common
on pages, this would be a no brainer, imo. But, even as they're still
only present on a minority of pages, knowing when they're available, up
front, as one of the first things you learn about a page is the way to
really take advantage of them.

My two cents American on ARIA landmarks. Very interested to hear other
opinions.

hi all
I'm writing to get opinions on whether orca should announce aria
landmarks by default. Landmarks are usually used to split pages into
managable sections. For example, bookshare.org uses them extensively.
This should of course be configurable, in the "web" preferences area.
This might actually need to be said by default only if verbosity is
set to verbose, otherwise it will need to be toggled on manually,
since it can definitely be a little verbose. There's already support
for landmarks, press m to go to the next one, shift+m to go to the
previous one, and alt+shift+m to bring up a list of them. Thoughts?
Thanks
