I've been using 2.17 versions from git that came out a bit before 2.18 with no particualar unusual negative 
events. I just installed  
2.18 to check, and indeed started 
having firefox problems. 
I stupidly forgot to build a backup of the prelease versions I was running, so now will have to downgrade all 
the way back to 2.16 I guess, but looks 
like this is  common if not universal.
