Re: [orca-list] which Debian Distro

Hi Glenn,

By default the system event sounds are disabled in Ubuntu. To enable
and use them you need to grab the Ubuntu Tweaks package and go in and
reconfigure your sounds for events and, if you want the login/startup
sounds there is a line you need to add to your startup. I don't have
the directions to do that off the top of my head but it is pretty
easy to do.

As for enabling Orca on startup that is also easy to do. Just go into
the system settings, go to accessibility, and select the screen reader
checkbox. The next time Unity starts Orca should startup too.
As for adding icons and launchers to the desktop I find that is
totally unnecessary in Unity. The reason is because in Unity there is
a specific place for them and that is the launchbar accessed with
alt+f1. It is easy to add and remove anything you want to the
launchbar so there isn't any need to duplicate launchers on the
desktop itself.

Finally, I think you are making to much of a big deal over
distributions. Do realize they are all customizable and you can
install and configure any desktop and graphical user interface you
like. If Unity does not suit you there is the option to install and
use Mate, Gnome, Xfce, whatever. Just pick a desktop you like, install
it, configure it and use it. Using the stock Ubuntu distribution is
perfectly fine because everything is customizable if you know how, and
judging by your posts you don't.

Cheers!

Hi,
It seems that there are a few differences in opinion on this, but I just
installed Ubuntu 14 X ( the latest and greatest) on someone's computer, and

I was disappointed in that there is no start-up sounds, I hope it is not
difficult to set them to be on.
I have gone into settings and sounds, but there is no regular type of sound

scheme to install that I could find.
Also, Orca does not start automatically, is there an easy fix for that?
Unity is not too bad, as he can type in what he wants and find it.
I wish there was a way to put shortcuts onto the desktop, it is otherwise a

waste of real estate.
But I thought I might either uninstall it, or install another distro, if
there is a better one for these things.
And, if I just install another, will it become the first item in GRUB, and
will the old one be the next?
Or, will I be given the option to remove the previous Ubuntu, and install
the new, even though he still has Windows on /dev/sda1?
Thanks.

Glenn
