Arch = not for beginners. Debian is pretty good for beginners. Fedora is also a good choice to learn on if 
you want to develop marketable skills.

If you want to stay up to date, then try Arch Linux: http://talkingarch.tk/

It assumes you're familiar with the shell and utilities and with editing
configuration files, as any serious Linux user should be. Since you're
planning to become involved in server administration according to your post,
then this should be a good option.
